About
Hokoji Shrine in Takato, part of Ina City, holds this combined festival of light to pray for a rich harvest and good health. Ground-cherry lanterns, meant to resemble ears of rice, and paper lamps hang along the streets, and after dark the old townscape takes on a soft orange glow. On the eve, Takato hayashi musicians make their way through town, and on the main day a children's portable shrine joins the hayashi parade. At nearby Kenpukuji Temple, stone Buddhist figures, including a set of Kannon statues credited to the master Takato stonemason Moriya Teiji, are lit up, and around 100 lanterns of thin wood made by local schoolchildren line the approach. Entry, participation and parking are all free. For enquiries, contact the Ina Chamber of Commerce.
