About
Over Lake Suwa, fireworks makers from across Japan come to show off brand-new shells and compete with them. Entries are built on fresh ideas that ignore the usual patterns and on techniques each maker has honed, so you never quite know what will appear in the sky next. The artistic polish of the pieces is a big part of the appeal. In 2026 the contest runs as the National New Fireworks Challenge Cup 2026, with four qualifying rounds on Saturdays in September and the final on October 31. It is a chance to see, by the lake in autumn, fireworks no one has seen before. The organizer is the New Fireworks Festival committee at the Suwa Tourism Association.
