About

Every May, Higashisonogi, a town known for its tea, holds a market to welcome the new season's leaves. The market dates back to the Edo period, and for three days local tea farmers, wholesalers and shops set up a long row of stalls, filling the street with the scent of fresh tea. The big draw is the stuff-a-bag offer on new tea that each tea shop runs as its showpiece, and there are other bargains too. Talking tea with the stallholders as you choose is part of the fun. The market runs along Sonogi-juku Street, about a three-minute walk from JR Sonogi Station, so it is easy to visit by train. People come from both inside and outside the town, and the streets buzz with early summer energy.
