About

On the night of July 25 each year, some 20,000 lanterns float on the Honmyo River in Isahaya. The festival mourns the 630 people who died in the Isahaya flood of July 25, 1957, and carries a wish for a safe and beautiful city. When the lanterns are lit at the 20:00 ceremony, the whole river shimmers with gentle light. Fireworks then join in, and together with the illuminated Spectacles Bridge, three kinds of light combine into one evening scene. Donations toward the lanterns are welcomed. The riverside is about 15 minutes on foot from JR Isahaya Station, or about 5 minutes from Hon-Isahaya Station on the Shimabara Railway. If it rains, the festival is postponed. It is organized by the city, the chamber of commerce and the local tourism association.
