About

Every July 24, the old castle town of Izuhara on Tsushima, with its stone walls, holds a Bon-season event in which children take center stage. Jizo statues stand at street corners all over the district, and on this evening more than thirty of them are dressed up and lit by Bon lanterns, waiting for children from around 18:00 until around 21:00. Because Jizo is believed to protect children, the custom has long been kept as a prayer for their safety and growth. Children put a coin in the offering box and press their hands together, and receive a Jizo charm and sweets. Walk the lanes from lantern to lantern and you will understand why local kids look forward to this night. It takes place in the town center about a 5-minute walk from Izuhara Port, and there is no parking.
