About
Tenkawa Daibenzaiten Shrine, the head shrine of the Omine range, in Tsubouchi, Tenkawa Village, holds its biggest festival of the year over July 16 and 17, opening the doors of its inner sanctuary for the occasion. On the 16th, the eve festival, music is offered on the kagura stage, as it is every year. On the 17th, yamabushi of the Honzan Shugen school, led by Shogoin, light a great outdoor fire ritual, Noh is performed in the kagura hall, and Goshu odori and other dances fill the evening. Seeing mountain ascetics' fire rites and Noh on the same day is the real appeal. Note that the shrine asks for advance reservations to attend its regular ceremonies, so check before you go.
