About

Every July 7, Kinpusenji on Mt. Yoshino holds one of its three great yearly ceremonies, featuring a giant green frog. In the early afternoon a drum float carrying the frog leaves the front of Chikurin-in and parades with a procession into the Zao-do Hall. After the service comes the frog-jumping rite, and at the end the frog receives the precepts from the presiding priest and happily becomes human again. A large outdoor fire ritual is also performed in the grounds. The core Rengee rite offers Zao Gongen lotus flowers from Benten Pond in Okuda, Yamato-Takada, where the ascetic En no Gyoja is said to have had his first bath; the lotuses are picked there that same morning.
