About
Kamo Matsuri is the spring festival of Aomi Shrine in Kamo, and on the main day three portable shrines go out in procession. Its other name, the Nursing Mothers' Festival, explains the most charming part: mothers walk in the procession holding babies dressed in festive robes, asking Tamayorihime, goddess of safe birth and child-rearing, to watch over them. Boys' robes show carp leaping up waterfalls or the folk heroes Kintaro and Momotaro, girls' robes peonies and chrysanthemums, all glinting with gold and silver thread. The eve festival comes the night before and sacred kagura the day after, with food stalls on the eve and main day. People from outside the city can apply to join the mothers' procession and borrow a robe. The shrine is about 5 minutes on foot from Kamo Station.
