About
Kashiwazaki's signature summer festival lasts 3 days, each night with its own character. Night one is a street folk dance parade that sweeps up onlookers until the streets are packed with dancers. Night two is taru niwaka, when floats and portable shrines that each group has worked hard on jostle each other amid lusty shouts. The last night is the fireworks over the sea, one of Echigo's three great displays alongside Nagaoka's river fireworks and Katakai's mountain fireworks: after sunset about 16,000 shells go up, including 300 large shells in rapid succession, starmines spreading over the water, wide starmines and 100 large shells fired at once. The venues are 10 to 20 minutes' walk from Kashiwazaki Station, and visitors are asked to use public transport.
