About

Murakami's summer festival is said to have run since 1633, over 2 days, an eve festival and a main day, and it costs nothing to watch. The stars are the 19 oshagiri floats that tour the town from the morning of the main day. Carved and finished with Murakami's lacquer craftsmanship, some were built more than two centuries ago, and the detail rewards a close look. In 2018 the float procession was designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan. It is also one of Niigata's three great takamachi fairs, with street stalls throughout. The venue in Haguro-machi is about 30 minutes on foot from Murakami Station, or about 5 minutes by car from the Murakami-Senami-Onsen interchange.
