About

Usa Jingu's summer purification festival is said to be the most splendid of the shrine's yearly rites. Its three deities each ride in their own portable shrine from the main sanctuary on the upper grounds to a temporary shrine in the precincts, staying there three days and two nights before returning. The procession is led by the guiding deity Sarutahiko, followed by children dressed as butterflies, birds and horses, officials in formal samurai-era attire, musicians on drums, flutes and gongs, the three portable shrines, and the priests. On August 1, the middle day, Ogasawara-school horseback archery (yabusame) takes place on the Ooyama approach, and on the night of August 2 there are fireworks to ward off misfortune. Once called Oharaie, the festival already appears in Heian-period records.
