About

Every May 5, Fuse Shrine in the Tominishidani area of Kagamino holds a rice-planting festival. People from that year's host community gather at the shrine and, each taking a set role, act out a lion dance and the work of rice planting, such as breaking up the paddy and plastering its ridges. The scene to watch is the back-and-forth between the lord and Fukutaro: the audience may howl with laughter, but the lord must keep a straight face, because tradition says a laugh from him means a poor harvest. The rite prays for a good harvest, is said to go back to the late Heian period, and is an important intangible folk cultural property of Okayama Prefecture.
