About
On Manabeshima in the Kasaoka Islands, three portable shrines from the island's Hachiman Shrine race at astonishing speed through narrow lanes and along the shore. After coming down from the shrine, they are loaded onto decorated fishing boats at the beach, carried across the water and brought ashore in the Honura district, and the sprint through the island streets from there is the main event. Each mikoshi has eight bearers, called koshimori, plus one guard in charge. In 2026 the festival ran over three days of eve rites, main rites and the return, with the main rites day the centre of the running. The high-speed boat from Kasaoka Port takes about 45 minutes, so look up return sailings in advance.
