About

Every May 5, Koboji Temple in the Senju district of Ushimado, Setouchi, holds its neri-kuyo. Like a play, it shows Amida Buddha, Kannon, Jizo and others coming from the Western Pure Land to meet a dying person and bring them back to paradise. Here the rite goes back to the Kamakura period and keeps much of its old form, such as a statue of Amida coming out to meet the procession. It takes place at the Henmyoin and Tojuin sub-temples. The Jogyodo hall on the grounds was rebuilt in 1781 and is a city-designated cultural property.
