About
On the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month, Itoman stages a giant tug-of-war on the road between Itoman Rotary and Hakugindo. The pulling starts after an opening ceremony held in the late afternoon in front of the headquarters tent on Prefectural Route 256. Before that, the rope is assembled on the same stretch of road in the morning, and in the afternoon a send-off ceremony at the Itoman Elementary School grounds starts a procession toward Hakugindo. A viewing tent beside the headquarters tent is reserved for people who need extra care, and shuttle buses and electric carts run from temporary parking areas. Flying drones and bringing bladed items are prohibited. If you would like a piece of rope as a keepsake, just ask a staff member to cut one for you.
