About
Every year in the eighth lunar month, Tarama Island in Okinawa spends three days performing folk dances, classical dances and kumiodori dance-drama to pray for a rich harvest. The festival is a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, and seeing children join in the old dances is one of its pleasures. In 2026 it ran from September 18 to September 20. According to Tarama Village, it goes back to the 1600s, when farmers in Miyako and Yaeyama bore heavy taxes. Having paid in full by the seventh lunar month, villagers reported it the following month at the sacred sites of the Nakasuji and Shiokawa districts and prayed for the next harvest, and the dances born at the village-wide celebrations are still danced today.
