About

Kadena Town's two-day festival at Kaneku Seaside Park honors Noguni Sokan. The stage features dedications of traditional performing arts and all kinds of live music, there is a potato-digging race and activities for children, kandaba jushi is served free of charge, and fireworks fill the night sky. Noguni Sokan, said to have been born and raised in the village of Noguni, is credited with bringing sweet potatoes to the Ryukyu Kingdom from Fujian, China, in 1605. The crop spread through Ryukyu's villages and on through Satsuma to the rest of Japan, saving many from hunger, and he is still fondly called Umu Ufushu, the great lord of the potato. There is no parking at the venue, so come by public transport or the town's shuttle bus.
