About
On January 15, the Little New Year, Hiraoka Shrine cooks azuki-bean rice porridge to divine the year ahead. Divining bamboo tubes and wooden sticks are used as the porridge cooks to forecast how well the crops will do and what each month's weather will bring. The rite starts at 9:00 a.m., and from 8:00 a.m. the same day, old talismans and charms brought back to the shrine are burned at the Tondo fire festival. Hiraoka Shrine is revered as the First Shrine of Kawachi Province and is also called "Moto-Kasuga" because two of its deities were shared with Kasuga Taisha in Nara. Its founding is said to date to three years before the enthronement of Emperor Jimmu, and its forest has long been praised as "Hoki no Mori."
