About

Doya Doya, held at Shitennoji Temple on January 14, is introduced by the temple as one of Japan's three great unusual festivals. It marks the final day of Shushoe, the special New Year prayers held in the Rokujido Hall from January 1 to 14: after a service inside, Doya Doya unfolds in front of the hall. Shusho means "correcting mistakes and restoring what is right," and the services began as prayers for peace in the land and a good harvest. Once the service ends, Goō Hōin talisman sticks and Shushoe prayer charms are available at the amulet counter. From 9 a.m. to around 1 p.m. the same day, the Shitennoji Tondo-yaki burns New Year decorations and old charms and talismans in front of the Niomon Gate.
