About
Centered on the annual festival of Sumiyoshi Taisha, Sumiyoshi Matsuri brings Osaka's summer festival season to a close. Because it is meant to purify all of Osaka, it was once also called Oharai. In 2026 it ran from July 20 to August 1. It starts on Marine Day in July with a rite in Sumiyoshi Park in which seawater is poured over the portable shrine to cleanse it. In the late-July procession, a great mikoshi of about two tons, donated in 1881 and back in use after restoration in 2016, crosses the arched bridge and travels to Shukuin Tongu in Sakai, the deity's resting place. At the eve rite on July 30 and the Nagoshi purification and main festival on July 31, finely dressed women and children pass through a ring of reeds, and worshippers carrying reeds join the procession. Rites at Shukuin Tongu and the Iigaibori purification end the festival on August 1.
