About
Osaka Temmangu's Tenjin Matsuri ranks with Kyoto's Gion Matsuri and Tokyo's Kanda Matsuri as one of Japan's three great festivals, with more than a thousand years of tradition. Events stretch over about a month, from late June to July 25. On the eve, July 24, a sacred boy sets a ceremonial halberd adrift on the Dojima River to announce the start of the festival. On the main day, July 25, a land procession gives way after dark to a river procession of many boats on the Okawa River, and fireworks are offered to the deity. Bonfires, lantern light and fireworks reflected on the water have given it the nickname "festival of fire and water." Its origin is traced to 951, when a halberd was floated from the shore by the shrine and people prepared boats to welcome the deity at the beach where it washed up for a purification rite.
