About
Each year on Setsubun, the eve of spring in early February, Hachita Shrine in Sakai rings twelve clay bells, one for each sign of the Chinese zodiac, and reads the coming year's fortunes from their sound. Thanks to this bell divination, locals know the shrine as Suzu-no-Miya, the Shrine of Bells. Setsubun can fall on February 2 in some years. The shrine is dedicated to Ame-no-Koyane and is an old shrine listed among the official shrines of ancient Izumi Province. Through the rest of the year it holds seasonal festivals: a flower offering in April, Tanabata in July, a wind-chime festival in July and August, a lantern festival in August, its main festival in October and a fire-safety rite in December.
