About
On the evening of the second Saturday in February, the Mishima district of Hasuike in Saga City holds this folk rite, an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan. The leads are two young men dressed as kasedori. Carrying bamboo poles about 1.7 meters long with finely split tips, they rush into the worship hall of the Kumano shrine and beat the floor hard. Then, followed by boys bearing a lantern, a tengu mask, paper wands and baskets, they call at homes around the district, repeat the performance and are given rice cakes, before returning to the shrine to eat them together and talk. Once held at Little New Year on the old lunar calendar, it is the only rite of its kind known in the prefecture, a visit by gods to people's homes.
