About

Every October 18 and October 19, at the festival of Shirahige Shrine in Kubooizumi, Saga, people from the Kawakubo district offer this dengaku, a kind of chigo dengaku recognized as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan and an uncommon sight in Kyushu. Roles are split by age: little ones hold paper flowers or a hand drum, boys clack the sasara, young men beat drums, and older men play flutes, each group with its own costume and movements. The oldest record is the inscription on a stone torii erected in 1734, and the dance is believed to have started as drumming to accompany rice-planting songs.
