About

This fire-themed festival takes place at the Yoshinogari ruins, the site of a large moated settlement from the Yayoi period. Treating fire as the root of everyday life, local people have organized it themselves since 1998. The venue is the Festival Plaza in Yoshinogari Historical Park, and entry is free. Daytime brings stage shows and a regional products fair, but the real draw comes after sunset: a torch procession open to all snakes through the park, followed by fire dances led by junior high school students and a huge farewell bonfire lit by Himiko. Flames flickering over the ancient village make for an otherworldly scene.
