About

For three days every summer, Asaka's citizens' festival draws around 700,000 people. Two events steal the show. One is the Kanhasshu Yosakoi Festa, where about 100 teams dance to the crack of naruko clappers; started in 1994, it was the first naruko dance festival on Honshu. The other is a fireworks show of some 9,000 shells launched from the middle of the city, so the bursts open right above your head. The festival dates from 1984, when residents worried about fading community ties started a modest event of Bon dancing and fireworks. The name Saikasai was picked from public suggestions in 1995.
