About
Koshigaya's summer Awa Odori takes over the areas around Minami-Koshigaya and Shin-Koshigaya Stations and draws more than 700,000 people. It is ranked with the festivals in Tokushima, the dance's home, and Tokyo's Koenji as one of Japan's three great Awa Odori. You can watch troupes dancing their way along the street venues, performances on stage, and kumi-odori, in which each group shows off formations of its own design. The idea came from a businessman from Tokushima Prefecture with a company based in Koshigaya, who wanted residents to feel a sense of hometown. Backed by local shopping and neighborhood associations and by the Awa Odori promotion association in Tokushima, the first festival took place in 1985, attracting 30,000 people.
