About

Yorii's summer festival is held on the riverbanks of Tamayodo, a prefecture-designated scenic spot, with fireworks overhead and festival boats on the water. About 5,000 shells go up with the ruins of Hachigata Castle, a national historic site, in the background, and the chance to see the fireworks and the boats reflected in the river at once has earned it the title of the finest water festival in Kanto. It began with a small stone shrine that the Yorii Hoshokai, forerunner of the town tourism association, discovered downstream on the Arakawa River. It proved to be a water deity enshrined by local fishermen to prevent drownings, and it was re-enshrined with Suitengu as a deity of water safety, safe childbirth and child-rearing. Because Suitengu's monthly festival days fall on dates ending in five, the first grand festival was held on August 5, 1931, and fireworks were added then as a side event.
