About
On February 1 every year, Tamashiki Shrine in Kisai, Kazo, holds a market along its approach, lined tightly on both sides with stalls of daruma dolls and food. The vendors' energetic calls and the crowds of worshippers give it a lively buzz. When the custom of buying a daruma at New Year started is unknown, but tradition holds that around 1882, daruma dealers from Takasaki first set up a stall in Saitama right here at Tamashiki Shrine. Each stall's dolls vary a little in expression, pattern, size and color, so the real pleasure is walking the approach, comparing them, and picking the one you like best.
