About
From mid-February to mid-March each year, Ogose Bairin, counted among the three great plum groves of Kanto, holds its plum festival. The grove spans about 2 hectares with roughly 1,000 trees in 35 varieties, from Shirakaga and Yae-kanko to the local Ogose-beni, plus an old tree called Kaisetsu thought to be over 670 years old; including the surrounding area, about 20,000 plum trees bloom. Legend says plum-growing in Ogose began around 1350, when trees were planted in honor of Sugawara no Michizane as his shrine, Kosugi Tenmangu (today's Baien Shrine), was brought here from Dazaifu in Kyushu. The grove drew sightseers in the Meiji era, and the poet Sasaki Nobutsuna came and wrote a poem here. Weekends and holidays during the festival feature a steam-driven miniature train, local festival music and taiko. Admission is charged, as is parking during the festival.
