About
This float contest, staged during the Kogashi Matsuri, the annual grand festival of Kinomiya Shrine, is the largest event on Atami's calendar. National Route 135 along the seafront is shut to cars, and each neighborhood's float passes the judges in turn. Expect carved wooden floats in the traditional style, creatively decorated floats, and portable shrines. Musicians riding on top play big and small drums, gongs and flutes; every neighborhood keeps its own rhythm and tempo, so when two floats meet the bands trade phrases back and forth. Judging is on day one and prizes come on day two, when winning neighborhoods may add festive trimmings before parading again. There are no stands, so find a spot along the highway between Ginza-cho and Higashikaigan-cho.
