About
In the Nishiure district of Misakubo, Tenryu Ward, Hamamatsu, villagers dance their dengaku at the Kannon hall from moonrise on the eighteenth day of the first lunar month until sunrise the following morning. The rite is an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan. Dances known as jino and hane-no, together with a lion dance and the closing shizume no mai, are offered one after another as prayers for abundant harvests and good health. Staying through the night lets you watch an old performing art all the way to dawn. Because it follows the lunar calendar, the date moves each year. The roads are dark at night, so bring a flashlight; in some years a shuttle bus runs from the Misakubo branch office.
