About
In the Izu Peninsula town of Kawazu, a festival celebrates the early-blooming Kawazu-zakura cherry while it is in flower. These trees are prized for pale pink blossoms that last a long time, and the variety is thought to be a natural cross between Oshima and Kanhi cherries. Most visitors walk the avenue of trees along the Kawazu River, and after dark parts of the riverside, including the stretch downstream from Tatebashi Bridge near Kawazu Station, are illuminated. Food stalls and small events such as free rice cakes around the festival area add to the early taste of spring. The story starts around 1955, when local resident Katsumi Iida came across a seedling by chance and planted it in his garden; after study by the town, prefectural bodies and others, it was named Kawazu-zakura and became the town tree. That original tree still stands in a private garden a short way toward Mount Amagi from Izukyu Kawazu Station.
