About

Ito's annual burning of Mount Omuro sets the entire mountain alight. Started to preserve the mountain, the practice has continued for more than 700 years. As soon as it is lit, red flames rush up from the base to the 580-meter summit. It has become a seasonal signal that spring has come to Ito, drawing tens of thousands of spectators each year. Afterwards you can view the charred, black slopes from nearby Sakura-no-Sato. You do not need to book, and parking is provided. Rain or rough weather can push the date back; check social media on the day to see whether it is going ahead.
