About
Every August, Ito holds its largest event in honor of Miura Anjin, the English-born navigator William Adams, who served Tokugawa Ieyasu as an adviser on foreign affairs. It marks the tradition that Adams, at Ieyasu's command, built Japan's first Western-style sailing ship right here in Ito. On the opening night, colorful lanterns float down the Matsukawa River; the following night, taiko teams from Ito and elsewhere face off at Nagisa Park, and fireworks close out both evenings. The last day brings a ceremony with flowers laid at the Anjin memorial, and that night a fireworks display over the sea, launched along the Ito shoreline, ends the festival. Walk about 10 minutes from Ito Station; there is no parking near the venues, so come by public transport.
