About
Mishima's largest summer festival coincides with the annual rites of Mishima Taisha, the leading shrine of old Izu Province, and each day has its own theme. It used to be called the Mishima Summer Festival and was renamed to emphasize history, culture and tradition. Day one is for floats and shagiri: carts from the host neighborhoods tour the town, then gather before the shrine at night to trade bursts of Mishima bayashi music as excitement peaks. Day two showcases traditional arts, led by the Yoritomo procession, recalling how Minamoto no Yoritomo prayed to the shrine's deity before raising his forces, with a celebrity cast as Yoritomo every year; hand-held fireworks, the Urayasu dance, ladder stunts and portable shrines fill out the program. The last day is for dance, as the Noheibushi and Mishima Samba parades take over the streets.
