About

The summer grand festival of Yaizu Shrine is famed as "Tokai's foremost Aramatsuri." Its core is the procession of the portable shrine, bound tight with a heavy hemp rope called the omawashi. It leaves the shrine in the morning, makes the round of resting stations across the city to the distinctive chant of "an-etton," and comes back late at night, its bearers dressed entirely in white. Sacred roles such as Sarutahiko and a mounted archer join the line, and at its head girls in tekomai costume sing lion kiyari songs. According to the shrine, "ara" here means not rough but simple and pure, meeting the gods with an unadorned heart. The way the omawashi is tied reflects rope skills refined by Yaizu's fishermen, and the whole festival carries the spirit of a fishing town.
