About
Tsunomine Shrine, on the summit of Mt. Tsunomine in Anan, holds a cherry blossom festival every year on April 2 and 3. Some 2,000 trees cover the mountain, among them Somei-yoshino, botan-zakura and wild yamazakura, and they usually peak in early April. Things get going with fireworks at 19:00 on April 2, the eve of the main day. On April 3, the opening and formal worship are at 10:00, the Tassui-ren troupe dances Awa Odori for the shrine at 10:30 and again at 13:00, and a bomochi rice-cake contest for children, women and men begins at 11:00. Rice cakes are handed out free to early arrivals. The festival takes place in Tsunomine Park, part of the shrine grounds, and entry costs nothing.
