About
Mitsugonji, a temple on the Nishiyama heights in Ikeda, Miyoshi, holds this fire festival. It is stop five on the Shikoku 36 Fudo pilgrimage and houses one of Shikoku's largest Fudo images, said to have been carved by Kobo Daishi with his fingernails, so it has long drawn pilgrims from far away. After the goma fire ritual, people cross the smoldering embers barefoot in the hiwatari fire-walk, which the public can join, to cleanse themselves and pray for good health. From the temple you can look out over the Yoshino River and the town of Ikeda. The festival is held rain or shine.
