About
Deep in the mountains of Kito in Naka, near the Kochi border, a Hachiman shrine has a rural stage in its grounds where this performance takes place. Far from any settlement, the setting lends the show an otherworldly, almost dreamlike mood. The main event is Awa ningyo joruri puppet theater, with puppets acting to gidayu narration and shamisen on a traditional village stage. Admission is free. Drivers should park at the Kito Kitagawa Ground and walk roughly 10 minutes, partly on steps, to the stage. It is a long way from Tokushima City through mountain country, so give yourself plenty of time to get there and back.
