About
On March 3 and 4 every year, Jindaiji holds its biggest event, the Ganzan Daishi Grand Festival, and a daruma market spreads through the temple grounds. It is one of Japan's three great daruma markets, with stall after stall of lucky daruma. The special touch here is the eye-painting station in front of the Daishi hall, where monks paint the eyes of newly bought daruma using Sanskrit letters: "a," signifying a beginning, goes in the left eye, and once the wish is granted, "un," signifying fulfillment, goes in the right before the doll is returned to the temple. The red and white plum trees at the gate are usually in bloom, and fire rituals for wishes continue all day in the Ganzan Daishi Hall.
