About
Once a year, Hachijojima in the Izu Islands, about 287 km south of the mainland, holds a freesia festival. The fields are carpeted with freesias in many colors, and the air smells sweet. You can do more than look: there is a free picking area where each person may take home up to 10 stems. At the on-site Freesia Café, take a break with sweets made from island specialties. Around this time humpback whales are sometimes seen offshore, so the trip can combine flowers and the sea. The flight from Haneda Airport to Hachijojima Airport takes about 55 minutes.
