About
On the second Sunday of March each year, Takaosan Yakuoin holds a fire-walking rite in the plaza by its car blessing hall at the foot of Mt. Takao. Based on the vows of the temple's principal deity, Izuna Daigongen, a great saito goma fire ritual is performed to pray for world peace, long life and road safety. Seasoned yamabushi ascetics of Mt. Takao carry out a bold ceremony amid the flames, and afterward ordinary worshippers can cross the fire too. You can write your name and age on a wooden prayer stick and throw it into the fire with your wish, and some charms are offered on this day only.
