About
On New Year's Eve night, people wearing fox masks or fox makeup walk from Shozoku Inari to Oji Inari Shrine. The parade is rooted in a local legend: on the last night of the year, foxes from all around gathered under a great tree in Oji to dress up before paying their respects at Oji Inari Shrine. Utagawa Hiroshige depicted the scene in his print Fox Fires on New Year's Eve at the Changing Tree, Oji, and Shozoku Inari is the shrine beside that tree. The parade started on New Year's Eve in 1993, when local residents went together to Oji Inari Shrine for their first prayers of the year, following the print. Continued as a way of using old culture to build a new kind of town, it won a national award for community development groups in 1999.
