About

Twice a year, on December 15 and 16 and again on January 15 and 16, a market takes over Boro-Ichi Street around the old Daikan Yashiki magistrate's residence in Setagaya, with countless stalls and roughly 200,000 visitors a day. It began in 1578 as a free market set up in Setagaya-shinjuku by Hojo Ujimasa, lord of Odawara Castle. Later it carried on as a year-end market, and when used clothing and rags (boro) became its main wares in the late nineteenth century, it took the name Boro-Ichi. Once every five years, locals dressed in period costume stage a magistrate's procession. Roads nearby are closed and there is no parking, so come via Setagaya or Kamimachi Station on the Tokyu Setagaya Line.
