About
Twice a year, in December and April, Sengakuji in Takanawa holds the Ako Gishi-sai to honor the 47 ronin of Ako, celebrating their loyalty and samurai spirit and praying for their souls. The Soto Zen temple was founded by Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1612 and served as the family temple of the Asano, lords of Ako. After the retainers' famous vendetta on December 14, 1702, they were laid to rest beside their master's grave, which visitors still come to in great numbers. During the winter festival the temple grounds stay open into the evening, with prayer services and special exhibits at the memorial hall. The 2026 program also lists a gagaku concert and the arrival of a Gishi procession at the temple. The Ako Gishi Memorial Hall on the grounds keeps items associated with the ronin.
