About
On Setsubun, the eve of the old calendar's first day of spring, Senso-ji in Asakusa holds a bean-throwing ceremony; the temple is said to have been the first in Edo to stage Setsubun on a large scale. Because demons are believed not to exist in Kannon's presence, the chant here is "Senshu banzei fuku wa uchi," without the usual "demons out." Temple priests and chosen toshi-otoko walk in procession from Denboin to the main hall, and after a service they throw beans from a special stage on the east side of the hall. Then comes Fukuju-no-Mai, the Seven Lucky Gods dance and one of the temple's three great dances, followed by a bean throw by entertainers connected to Asakusa, organized by the Asakusa Tourism Federation.
