About

On the day of their autumn festival, three shrines in Sekigane, Kurayoshi City (Yuzeki Shrine, Otorii Shrine and Hiyoshi Shrine) send out processions escorting their portable shrines. Modeled on the grand processions of Edo-period feudal lords, the event is also known locally as the Daimyo Procession. What makes it special is that each shrine keeps a different style: Yuzeki, in front, travels as if on a flat road; Otorii marches as if climbing up to a castle; and Hiyoshi, at the rear, moves as if coming back down. Three processions with different movements and line-ups advance at the same time. About 90 people dressed as footmen and samurai cover roughly 1 km, from the city's Sekigane branch office through the hot spring town to Jizoin Temple just past Yuzeki Shrine. Its origins are said to go back to the Tenmei era in the late Edo period, and it is an intangible folk cultural property of Kurayoshi City.
