About
On the first Sunday of September, the Kamiyodo district of Yodoe in Yonago marks Hassaku around Tenjingaki Shrine. Hassaku is the first day of the eighth lunar month, when early rice comes into ear, so it is also called the festival of the rice harvest. Many parts of Japan observe Hassaku, but only Kamiyodo does so with a tug-of-war. The custom used to be found in Sazami and Imazu elsewhere in Yodoe and in Hyogo Prefecture's Tajima area too, yet it has disappeared from all of them, leaving Kamiyodo as the sole keeper of the Hassaku tug-of-war. The series of rites is an intangible folk cultural property of Yonago City, and the tug-of-war has been selected by the national government as an intangible folk cultural asset worth recording.
