About
Ebie Kamo Shrine in Imizu holds its autumn festival every year on Autumnal Equinox Day. Three floats make their way around the neighborhood to graceful float music, decked with flowers as hanayama during the day and lit with lanterns as chochinyama after dark. Each district takes pride in the mechanical karakuri puppet riding on its float: East Town has "Karako Asobi," Middle Town "Karako Kensui Kaiten" and West Town "Karasaru Doji." The last is a masterwork by the seventh-generation puppet maker Tamaya Shobei. Controlled with 22 silk threads, it walks and dashes while tapping a small drum, and in a flash its child's face turns into a monkey's. Don't miss the vigorous float work chant performed in the parking lot of the Ebie Community Center.
